A day at the quarry: why travertine is everywhere
We followed a block of stone from an Italian hillside to the Pebble coffee table.
Travertine forms where hot springs leave limestone behind, layer by layer. The pits and bands that make it beautiful are the traces of gas bubbles and seasons, frozen in stone.
Fold choose each slab by eye at the quarry, looking for an even cream with bands that will run the length of a tabletop. Only one block in five makes the cut.
Honed rather than polished, the finished surface is soft to the touch and forgiving of everyday marks. Seal it, use coasters, and it will outlast everything else in the room.
