The last projectionists still threading 35mm

Film prints are heavy, fragile and expensive. A handful of projectionists refuse to let them go.

A feature film on 35mm arrives in five or six heavy reels. The projectionist splices them into one long ribbon, threads it through the machine by hand and checks the focus from a window the size of a letterbox.

Only a few cinemas still do it regularly. Their projectionists talk about film the way sailors talk about weather: something you respect, prepare for, and never fully control.

Screenings on film sell out first. Audiences say they can see the difference. Projectionists say they can hear it: the soft clatter of the machine behind the wall.
