Skaters won the plaza. Now what?

After years of fences and fines, the city let skaters keep the square outside the old library. The arrangement is working, mostly.

For a decade the square was a battleground: skaters, security guards, metal studs on every ledge. Last spring the city gave up and gave in.

The studs are gone, the ledges are waxed, and on a sunny afternoon there are more people watching than skating. Café owners who opposed the change now put chairs facing the action.

The remaining arguments are about noise after ten. The skaters have proposed a curfew of their own.
