Sossusvlei

Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia

24.73° S, 15.29° E

15 July · 08:06 local time · Sun 4° above the horizon

Red dunes of the Namib Sand Sea, inscribed by UNESCO in 2013, surrounding pale clay pans where the dead camel thorn trees of Deadvlei still stand.

Soon after sunrise the dunes are half fire, half shadow, and the trees throw long lines across the white clay.

A day here

  1. 08:00

Be at the dunes as the sun rises, while the shadow sides are still deep.

  2. 13:04

Return to the lodge before the clay pans grow too bright to look at.

  3. 18:07

Watch the gravel plains and far mountains turn violet from the lodge.
