The bookshop that became a radio station

Every evening at seven, a secondhand bookshop turns off its lights and goes on air.

Between the poetry shelves and the cookery section there is a desk with two microphones and a small mixing desk. From seven to nine, the shop broadcasts.

The shows are readings, mostly, with music between chapters. Regulars bring books from home and read them aloud; listeners call in to ask what happens next.

The owner says sales have doubled since the station started. “People hear a page,” he says, “and they come in the next day for the rest.”
