Museums after dark: worth the queue?
Late openings promise empty galleries and a drink in the sculpture hall. The reality is busier.
The pitch is irresistible: the museum at night, the crowds gone, a DJ in the foyer and the paintings to yourself.
The reality, on a Friday at eight, is a queue around the block and a gallery as full as any Saturday afternoon. The paintings are still there. So is everyone else.
And yet. Something changes when the windows go dark. People talk more, linger longer, laugh in rooms that are usually silent. Go late, go on a weeknight, and go for the atmosphere rather than the solitude.
