Check with the Light FinderAbout this plant
Young monstera leaves arrive whole; the famous splits and holes appear as the plant matures and gets more light. In the wild it climbs trees with its aerial roots, so give it a moss pole once it passes a metre and it will grow up rather than out.
How to care for it
- Light
- Bright, indirect light is best. It copes with medium light but grows slower and makes fewer splits. Keep it out of hot afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves.
- Water
- Water when the top 5 cm of soil are dry: roughly every one to two weeks in summer, less in winter. Let the excess drain away.
- Good to know
- Wipe the leaves now and then so they can take in light. Feed monthly from spring to early autumn.

Rated 5 out of 5 Rated 5 out of 5 The care card actually helped
I always overwatered. The card said “when the top 5 cm are dry”, so now I check with a finger, and for once nothing has rotted.

Rated 4 out of 5 Lovely plant, slightly smaller pot
Healthy and well rooted. The size guide was accurate for height; the grow pot was a little narrower than I pictured.
