The ZZ grows from fat underground rhizomes that store water for weeks, which makes it one of the few plants that genuinely prefers to be forgotten. New shoots unfurl a few times a year.
How to care for it
- Light
- Low to bright, indirect light: one of the best choices for small or north-facing windows. Avoid direct summer sun.
- Water
- Every two to three weeks, once the soil has dried right through. In winter, once a month is often enough.
- Good to know
- Yellowing stems usually mean too much water. Wear gloves when repotting; the sap can irritate skin.
