Snake plants store water in their thick leaves, which is why they thrive on neglect and suffer from kindness. Botanists moved them from Sansevieria into Dracaena in 2017; most shops still use the old name.
How to care for it
- Light
- Anything from low light to a sunny window. It grows quickest in bright light but holds its shape in a dim corner for years.
- Water
- Only when the soil is completely dry, about every two to four weeks, and even less in winter. Overwatering is the one thing that reliably kills it.
- Good to know
- Use a free-draining, gritty mix and a pot with a hole. Repot only when the roots bulge or crack the pot.
